The Law of LIFE

A beautiful short story (nouvelle) by Jack London

"The Law of Life" is a STORY about an aging man

abandoned by his Eskimo tribe and left to die …

Summary__Résumé

Old Koskoosh was the chief of an Eskimo tribe.

Now he is blind and lame, and his tribe is preparing to leave him alone
in the snow to face his death

as they travel on without him.

His son leaves him a pile of sticks to feed the fire beside him.

When the fire dies, so will he.

As he waits alone for death, he thinks of the time he left his own father in the snow.

He also remembers having seen a sick, old moose killed by wolves

when it straggled behind the rest of the herd.

"It was the law of all life," he decides.

When he feels the cold nose of a wolf on him

and hears the pack's footsteps surround him, he first fights them off, then gives in.

"To Build a Fire"

is a short story by American author Jack London.

The famous version of this story
was published in 1908.

Jack London published an earlier and radically different version in 1902

in which the protagonist survives his ordeal,

and a comparison of the two provides a dramatic illustration

of the growth of his literary ability.

It is widely considered as a prime example of the naturalist movement

and of a Man vs. Nature conflict.

Characters

There are only two characters in "To Build a Fire," a man and a dog,

although some count Nature as a third character.

In the story, Nature is portrayed as the antagonist—

the foe against which the man is pitted for survival.

However, Nature doesn't act deliberately--it simply is,

and it is the man's own folly and arrogance that causes his death.
